Debate 15-10-12

Title: Russell Brand is doing the right thing in trying to get the British govt to change their policy of drug abusers.- Opposing the motion.

statistics:
  • Russell Brand has been arrested over 12 times for drug use and only managed to remain clean with the help of the methadone clinics. He can't preach what he can't follow.
  • less than 20% of drug abusers can kick an addiction if they are admitted into rehab on their own terms.
  • If drug users are left on the street only 56% can be treated on time(before they commit crimes or OD) in drug treatment centers. If they are jailed however, 74% of the prison population are involved in a Meth treatment.
  • Nearly 10,000 people each year in Ireland are placed in a meth program. Up to 35% of these go on to rebuild their lives and head back into employment.
  • Quitting drugs cold turkey, as Russell proposes isn't a viable option. Over Dosing in drugs is more frequent in those that have quit rapidly, as the take too much of the one drug because they think their bodies are lacking.
  • Drug related crimes also rise as there is conflict over the availability of drugs.

Chris Ofili

So on Monday everybody was given an artist to research using the Library resources. My artist is Chris Ofili  a British contemporary artist. While he lives and creates art in England he is also of African descent. From visiting his parents home town in Nigeria he gained inspiration for a new style of art. Seeing the cave paintings  made him incorporate primary colours in dots and swirls. Looking at African medicinal methods he decided to use Elephant and Baboon dung in his works. He developed what some people refer to as an alter ego 'Captain Shit' which featured in many of his pieces
Rather than use the normal method of hanging paintings Ofili let the pieces rest on lumps of dung. If he was using dung within the artwork it was generally as a glue on to which jewels could be stuck. Occasionally he used locks of his own hair in his artworks.'shit head'
He won the Turner prize in 1988 which was one of the reasons that he and an architect
David Adjaye were chosen to redesign the British Pavilion. http://www.thisistomorrow.info/default.aspx?webPageId=1
The colours he used in creating the dome represent his heritage. Red is for the blood of the people that was shed for the Green of the land, and Black is associated with the skin colour of the people.

All in all I enjoyed researching Ofili. His artwork is unique because of his experiences and the materials he uses. I found the project challenging as there was a limited resource of information about Ofili in the Library.

Helllloo :)

So today marks the start of the third week in art college. And the question that we keep coming back to is why we have chosen Art & Design. I must say that it's a question that i struggle to answer for many reasons. I will be the first to admit that i joke and say no other course would take me, but honestly i could have gotten in to most others. Art drew me in however. It began as an interest and a pastime but soon developed into more than that. I'm hoping it will develop into a career and having work with an interior designer in the past i'm beginning to rule out certain careers already. I (unlike some) am not looking to take over the world, but i'm hoping this course will help me develop skills. Learn to see the world differently, be creative and confident enough in myself to develop new skills.
I enjoy trying new things and with that in mind i am open to trying all the different aspects of the art course. I do not know what i want to specialize in yet but i'm keeping a clear mind about it until the date that i have to choose..
I chose art because at the end of the day it is what i'm good at it is where i am hoping to end up. I'm not sure of the career whether it be tattoo artistry, artistry, interior design, or teaching.
Somethings I am hoping i'm good at, other things will be a new struggle but i'm looking forward to learning. 11 days in and i'm already seeing a change in how i am drawing and i know that this is only the beginning, so here's to the start :D
